আমরা জানি, কম্পিউটারের দুটি অংশ থাকে। একটি হলো হার্ডওয়্যার আর আরেকটি সফটওয়্যার। কম্পিউটার এই দুইটির মাধ্যমে চলে। একটি কম্পিউটারের যা দৃশ্যমান অর্থাৎ দেখা যায় এরকম যন্ত্র ও যন্ত্রাংশকে হার্ডওয়্যার বলে। হার্ডওয়্যার বলতে কীবোর্ড, মাউস, মনিটর ইত্যাদিকে বুঝায়। আর দেখা যায় না অথচ অন্তরালে থেকে কম্পিউটারকে চালায় তাই সফটওয়্যার। যেমনঃ বিভিন্ন প্যাকেজ প্রোগ্রাম। একটা কী-বাের্ড, মনিটর, সিস্টেম ইউনিট ন্যূনতম এই কয়টি হার্ডওয়্যার সামগ্রী যুক্ত করে কম্পিউটার থেকে আমরা কাজ পেতে পারি। হার্ডওয়্যার ও সফটওয়্যার এর পার্থক্য নিচে তুলে ধরা হলো।
হার্ডওয়্যার
১. কম্পিউটারের বিভিন্ন যন্ত্রপাতি যার উপস্থিতি আছে তাকে হার্ডওয়্যার বলা হয়। উদাহরণ: মনিটর, হার্ডডিস্ক, প্রসেসর, র্যাম, রম ইত্যাদি।
২. দেখা যায় এবং স্পর্শ করা যায়।
৩. সফটওয়্যার ছাড়া হার্ডওয়্যার প্রাণহীন দেহের মতো।
৪. হার্ডওয়্যার তৈরি করতে বড় শিল্প প্রতিষ্ঠান গড়তে হয়।
৫. হার্ডওয়্যার সফটওয়্যারকে নিয়ন্ত্রণ করে না।
৬. দীর্ঘদিন ব্যবহারে হার্ডওয়্যার নষ্ট হয়ে যেতে পারে।
৭. ভাইরাস হার্ডওয়্যারের ক্ষতি করতে পারে না।
৮. একই হার্ডওয়্যার একজন বা কয়েকজন ব্যবহার করতে পারে।
৯. হার্ডওয়্যার তৈরি করে যানবাহনের মাধ্যমে পৃথিবীর বিভিন্ন জায়গায় পৌঁছাতে হয় যা সময় সাপেক্ষ।
সফটওয়্যার
১. কম্পিউটারের ল্যাংগুয়েজ দিয়ে তৈরি নির্দেশাবলি বা প্রোগ্রামিং কোডসমূকে সফটওয়্যার বলা হয়।
২. স্পর্শ করা যায় না।
৩. হার্ডওয়্যার ছাড়া সফটওয়্যার অর্থহীন।
৪. সফটওয়্যার তৈরি করতে বড় কোন ইন্ডাস্ট্রি প্রয়োজন নেই।
৫. সফটওয়্যার হার্ডওয়্যারকে নিয়ন্ত্রণ করে।
৬. আজীবন ব্যবহার করলেও সফটওয়্যার নষ্ট হয় না।
৭. কম্পিউটার ভাইরাস সফটওয়্যারের ক্ষতি করতে পারে।
৮. একই সফটওয়্যার কপি করে লক্ষ লক্ষ লোক ব্যবহার করতে পারে।
৯. সফটওয়্যার তৈরির পর ইন্টারনেটের মাধ্যমে মুহূর্তের মধ্যেই সারা পৃথিবীর লক্ষ লক্ষ গ্রাহকের কাছে সহজেই পৌঁছানো যায়।
