Bangladesh national anthem Lyrics in English

Oma amar prane, bajay basi.

Sonar Bamla ami tomay bhalo basi, ki sobha, ki chaya go ki sneha,

Amar Shonar Bangla (My Golden Bengal)

My Bengal of gold, I love you

Forever your skies, your air set my heart in tune

as if it were a flute,

In Spring, Oh mother mine, the fragrance from

your mango-groves makes me wild with joy-

Ah, what a thrill!

In Autumn, Oh mother mine,

in the full-blossomes paddy fields,

I have seen spread all over - sweet smiles!

Ah, what a beauty, what shades, what an affection

and what a tenderness!

What a quilt have you spread at the feet of

banyan trees and along the banks of rivers!

Oh mother mine, words from your lips are like

Nectar to my ears!

Ah, what a thrill!

If sadness, Oh mother mine, casts a gloom on your face,

my eyes are filled with tears!

A few words about the country:

I just took a quick nap, looked on the clock and realised a few months had passed since my last post on this blog. Oh well, here goes.

Bangladesh is one of those countries whose name sounds like someone dropped a heavy frying pan on the floor. It also has a flag that torments people with OCD (In case you haven’t noticed, the red ball isn’t in the center of the flag, but rather slightly to the left. Is it bothering you yet?). Anyway, Bangladesh used to be part of India, then decided India wasn’t all that it used to be and joined in the independence of Pakistan. Then in 1971 they suddenly thought that being one of the buns in a Pakistani sandwich with Indians in between was not their cup of tea. Today it also the country that contributes the most to the UN peacekeeping forces in terms of manpower. My guess is those soldiers all have OCD, and wanted to run away from their flag.

History of the anthem:

In 1905, the epicly bearded Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore wrote and composed the Bengal national anthem. He was a pretty badass guy, not in the least for having a beard. For one, he was the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in literature in 1913 (take that, America, Africa and Oceania!). He also denounced his knighthood, saying: “The time has come when badges of honour make our shame glaring in the incongruous context of humiliation, and I for my part, wish to stand, shorn, of all special distinctions, by the side of those of my countrymen who, for their so called insignificance, are liable to suffer degradation not fit for human beings.” Or in short: I am already bearded, I have no need of knighthood to heighten my social status. Well anyway, after independence, the country chose his song ‘Amar Sonar Bangla’ (which translates to Golden Bengal but sadly has nothing to do with tigers or sweet martial arts moves) to be their national anthem.

Lyrics:

Bengal lyrics (Latin transliteration)
