You should know how to use a thermometer because when you will fill you or your child may have a fever, take a thermometer.

Getting an accurate reading means knowing the right way to use the thermometer you have. There are several variations from temporal to oral, from rectal to axillary, and it's easier said than done.

Types of thermometers

You have the option of using a digital or manual (mercury) thermometer to measure temperature in three ways:

• Verbal
• Rectal
• Axial (armpit)

There are two other types of digital-only thermometers available:

• Timepanic (ear)
• Temporary (forehead)

The American Academy of Pediatricians recommends digital thermometers for taking a baby's temperature because they are quick and accurate. The specific types of digital thermometers they recommend vary with age. By infrared thermometer, you can measure the temperature of the human body from a distance. 

* Discard the old rectal thermometer and buy a new one for oral use.

Use of an oral thermometer

Oral thermometers are not the best option for young children who are not able to keep their mouths closed for long periods of time for better reading.

To use an oral thermometer:

Wash your hands before operating the thermometer.

Put the tongue down.

Make sure the mouth is closed all the time.

Wait for about five minutes (manual thermometer) or beep (digital thermometer).

Use of an axillary thermometer

Although it is the least accurate way to get a baby's temperature, it is often used to prevent the spread of germs in school and daycare.

To use an axial thermometer:

Place the thermometer under the arm with the tip at the deepest crease of the armpit.

Wait for about five minutes (manual thermometer) or beep (digital thermometer).

Use of a rectal thermometer

Rectal thermometers are specially designed with small tips that allow them to read accurately without going too far into the body. This method should be used for children or for those whose temperature cannot be taken in any other way.

To use a rectal thermometer:

Use lubricants, such as petroleum jelly, to make insertion easier.

Place the tip of the thermometer on the anus.

Wait for about five minutes (manual thermometer) or beep (digital thermometer).

Clean your thermometer

Rinse with cold water before and after using your thermometer, then rub with alcohol. Rinse thoroughly to remove the alcohol.

Use of a tympanic thermometer

These in-ear thermometers are very popular, especially among parents of young children, because they are faster and easier to use than regular digital thermometers. However, tympanic thermometers can be difficult for children to use and are often mistaken because their ear canals are too small.

To use a tympanic thermometer | thermometer use

Pull the upper part of the ear lobe up and back

Place the tip of the thermometer (covered with probe cover) into the ear canal opening. (Make sure you are pointing the probe at the ear canal opening and not at the rear wall.)

Press the button until the beep.

Before using this method, make sure that no extra ear wax is made, as this may lead to less accurate results.

Temporal thermometer | thermometer use

The newest and most expensive thermometer on the market, the Temporal Thermometer can draw heat from the temporal artery, which is just below the skin of your forehead. They are the fastest and probably the easiest thermometers to use. However, they can often read very little.

Different models may have different instructions for use. Typically, to use a temporal thermometer:

Mercury thermometer

Mercury thermometers are no longer sold in the United States. When mercury is released, it causes danger, which is toxic.

If you have an old mercury thermometer that you decide to use, shake it to bring the mercury down to 96 degrees Fahrenheit. Then hold it for about five minutes to get the correct reading. 4

Temperature range

The "normal" body temperature is usually referred to as 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit. However, they're actually a range of body temperatures that are affected by all sorts of factors including age, height, weight, sex, ethnicity, and even time of day and level of activity.

Interestingly, the average seems to have decreased over time. A 2017 study found that the average body temperature is close to 97.88 degrees Fahrenheit. Although this is relatively new information, it has not yet affected what the medical community considers normal and abnormal.

When to call a doctor

Not all fevers require treatment. If the fever makes you uncomfortable, you can take over-the-counter fever medications such as aspirin (adults only), Martin or Advil (ibuprofen), or Alev (naproxen).

7. Your baby cries or yells and can't be calmed

Which lasts more than two days

It is accompanied by a high range and a rash

This is accompanied by stiff neck and confusion or annoyance, sensitivity to light (photophobia), dehydration or convulsions.

Any fever above 105 degrees Fahrenheit is a life-threatening emergency. Call 911 or ask someone to take you to the emergency room right now.
