Paypal is available in Bangladesh

PayPal Bangladesh, a popular medium for online money transactions around the world, will be launched in Bangladesh in December this year. Prime Minister's Private Industry and Investment Adviser Salman F Rahman confirmed the matter on Saturday. He said this while visiting the Walton factory at Chandra in Gazipur.

However, Salman F Rahman, one of the top business leaders in the country, did not give any details about the launch of PayPal. At the time, IFIC Bank Managing Director M. Shah Alam Sarwar, Private Secretary to the Prime Minister's Adviser Zahidul Islam Bhuiyan, and others were present.

Online freelancers of the country have been demanding the launch of the PayPal service to facilitate the withdrawal of foreign currency earned from abroad by working online in the country. In view of this, PayPal signed an agreement with Sonali Bank a few years ago. Later, with the approval of the Bangladesh Bank, both sides agreed to launch the service.

It is learned that Sonali Bank and PayPal have been examining the technical and security aspects of online money transactions including websites for a long time. State Minister for Information and Communication Technology Junaid Ahmed Palak recently spoke to top PayPal officials about this.

According to previous information, Bangladeshis will be able to make money transactions and purchases in 190 countries and 23 currencies through PayPal's three types of package accounts. Sonali Bank will not charge extra for this. However, to prevent money laundering, customers have to shop within the travel quota set by Bangladesh Bank.

For this, anyone can register directly by visiting the PayPal BD website. In that case you have to choose a suitable package out of three packages. You have to open an account by paying an annual fee of up to Rs.

PayPal coming to Bangladesh soon

After much speculation and several false starts, popular online payment system PayPal is said to be launched in Bangladesh by December, at the end of this year.

Salman F Rahman, private industry and investment adviser to the prime minister, mentioned this to reporters during his visit to a Walton factory at Chandra in Gazipur on Saturday.

A Walton official, however, clarified to Dhaka Tribune that Walton was not involved with PayPal and its Bangladesh operations in any way.

The prime minister's adviser simply made the announcement when asked by a reporter after his factory visit was over, he added.

In 2016, Sonali Bank was said to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with PayPal, allowing it to launch its operation in Bangladesh.

Even the ICT Ministry was rumoured to launch the platform in Bangladesh several times.

A service was introduced but it was not PayPal, but Xoom, an online money transfer system that was acquired by PayPal with its services being very different.
