What is biotechnology? |
Biotechnology consists of two terms Biology and Technology. The word biology means special knowledge about organisms and the word technology means technology. In other words, the interrelated subject of Biology and Technology is biotechnology. The term biotechnology was first coined in 1919 by Hungarian engineer Karl Ereky. This technology is used to invent new organisms (plants or animals or microorganisms) or to process or produce by-products using new cells, microorganisms or parts of them.
Biotechnology is not a new addition to science. The application of biotechnology has started since the dawn of human civilization. In terms of fermentation and brewing, technology was acquired by humans about 6,000 years ago. Since Gregor Johann Mendel's discovery of the principles of genetics in 183, biotechnology has begun to make new advances. Modern biotechnology began in 1953 with the discovery of the DNA double helix model by Watson and Crick.
Among the many methods of biotechnology, tissue culture and genetic engineering are now widely used in agricultural development and other fields.
